and what are your options? How much can someone charge you for a
beat? What do tour publicists make? How much should you be paying

Major Labels For 1 Million Please:
What Is The Fine Line Between Brilliance and Chaos?
In 2003, 38,269 new releases were tracked by Soundscan. How many sold
platinum (1 million copies)? A lot? A ton? Certainly out of close
to 40,000 new releases a few hundred sold platinum, right? It was
43. Shocking? Okay, probably an anomaly, weird planet alignment and
all that, so since we don’t like that answer, let’s change
the question. How many sold gold (at least 500,000)? Now we have to
be talking at least a few hundred, right? Wrong, 63 sold gold. According
to Soundscan, 106 titles accounted for over 45% of all sales in 2003.
Think it is scary being an artist with these odds? At least, you still
have a day job! What about the person whose day job is discovering
and breaking one of those 106 winners? If you can digest these numbers
and are still willing to poke the sack of the dragon, don’t
miss this Jeopardy, I mean A&R panel.
